The 9th Cake of Christmas

It’s our third annual holiday series…. The 12 Cakes of Christmas!!  We’re oohing and aahing over twelve marvelous cake designs, created especially for this series!  All brand new, never seen before, and created by some of your favorite bakers!    For our theme this year, we’re taking a moment to reflect on our favorite Christmas memories and traditions.  It’s a feel good month, celebrating the little things that make this season shine bright.  Each of our featured bakers was asked to create a cake based on a classic Christmas tradition.

Up today, we have cake number nine.  Our ninth cake celebrates a classic wish made each and every year by the young and young at heart.  Hopes for glistening tree tops and the sounds of sleigh bells in the snow.  With each Christmas card we write, we dream of that light dusting on the ground that shimmers and sparkles and always puts us in the holiday spirit.  The Ninth Cake of Christmas was inspired by…. Dreams of A White Christmas!

The ninth cake in our series comes to us from Erica O’Brien, owner of Erica O’Brien Cake Design located in Hamden, CT.  Erica has been with us from the beginning of this holiday series,  stealing our hearts with her white houndstooth cake back in 2011 and her incredible mistletoe cake in 2012.  And who can forget this gorgeous winter white design inspired by a bouquet of flowers.  Erica’s refined style and knack for elevating current trends into elegant designs consistently has us gushing.  This year, she has us dreaming of scenes filled with white sparkling snow and frosty goodness.  With an embossed snowflake pattern, white poinsettias, acorns and pine cones, today’s cake is full of fabulous white-on-white texture and style.  And yes, I even spy some sparking trees!  It’s time for The 9th Cake of Christmas!

Erica O’Brien shares the inspiration for her design:

“The theme of this cake,  I’m  Dreaming of a White Christmas, was inspired by the classic song made famous by Bing Crosby.  For our design concept we turned to Pinterest, of course, where we found beautiful winter white collages that evoked exactly the feeling we were going for: wintry yet warm, sophisticated and subtle yet whimsical.”

Erica O’Brien tells us about her technique:

“Some of the elements we incorporated include hand-crafted sugar poinsettia, acorns, holly leaves, pine cones, trees, branches, and garland. We used several different types of sugar, from crystals to glitter, to convey the look and feel of snow. We also embossed the cake using various snowflake cutters.”
