Miso Bakes: Contributor

Hello, my name is Miso!
I am a twenty-something testing boundaries and seeing where a growing passion may lead.

After receiving my BA in both Cognitive Science and Sociology, I went forth to pursue a longtime interest and dream of mine: baking. In late 2009, I received my Diplôme de Pâstisserie with Highest Honors from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts here in Los Angeles, California.Today, I spend most of my time designing cakes for my portfolio, collaborating with friends in the creative industry, baking, blogging, and building new friendships with those who share the same passion and interest.Everyday, I learn, and everyday, I am humbled by the talent and creativity of individuals out there. I am no where near perfect and am actually a tad embarassed to call myself a baker or a cake designer for I believe I still have so much more to learn, grow, and perfect.

If anything, I hope my monthly posts will, at the least, serve as a source of entertainment at which we can laugh at, learn from, and grow together. All in all, welcome to my journey through the kitchen and through life!

DIY Birthday Candles Cake | by Miso Bakes | TheCakeBlog.com DIY: Birthday Candles Cake"I will leave the decoration up to you." "You can do whatever you would like." I bet most of us have a love-hate relationship with the statements above. I know I do. A part of me gets excited because I can finally execute a design I had in mind, but at the same time, there's that fear of disappointing the paying client or friend you're creating the cake for. And you cannot help but wonder if you really can do whatever you'd like. Is that even appropriate?

DIY Watercolor Cake Tutorial by Miso Bakes | TheCakeBlog.com DIY: Watercolor Painted CakeThis past December, I traveled to Europe again but this time with my mom accompanying me. Together we visited many museums and looked at hundreds, if not thousands, of paintings. Though I have been to and have seen some of the museums and paintings a few times before, my fingers still tingled in excitement and my heart still smiled at the sight of works by Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Georges Seurat, etc. The use of colors and textures, brushstrokes and lighting in some of the paintings left me so in awe that I talked about them for days. Months later, I still sit here and daydream about them. I returned wanting to create a cake inspired by all the art I saw. I wanted to add texture and depth using various buttercream colors, but at the same time, I wanted it to be season appropriate. This is what I created...

Macaron Cake Tutorial by Miso Bakes | TheCakeBlog.com DIY: Macaron CakeOur contributor, Miso of Miso Bakes, is here with a new DIY for you today … I am extremely excited to share this first cake tutorial of 2013 with all of you! It is a cake inspired not only by my love for the confection, but also by the question I am asked the most: How do you make macarons? Macarons are a light, sweet and subtly chewy cookie sandwich filled with ganache, buttercream, or jam. Though the ingredients are fairy simple and are composed of egg whites, almond flour and confectioner's sugar, the cookies can be quite finicky and stressful to make. Therefore, to save a headache or two for you, I decided to take an easier approach in helping you create the perfect macaron-- I turned it into cake form!

Lemon Citrus Cake by Miso Bakes | TheCakeBlog.com DIY: Lemon Citrus CakeA fresh take on lemon, our contributor Miso Bakes is sharing a bold and bright Lemon Citrus Cake today... Growing up, my grandparents always took my siblings and I on a long walk around the neighborhood after dinner. As a matter of fact, this is one of my fondest and most cherished childhood memories. My favorite walks were those taken during the summer months when it was still bright outside. The warmth gently embraced my skin and the occasional breeze made the vibrant green leaves on huge trees flutter like little butterflies. Every so often, greetings were shared with neighbors reading a book on their porch or watering their front lawn. Other times, my sister and I excitedly squealed and giggled as we ran through sprinklers that spewed water all over the sidewalk.
