Spirals & Poms Baby Shower Cake
January 24th, 2013 by Carrie Sellman | 7 Comments

There’s nothing like a group of women, gathered together, to celebrate a baby on the way.  And a party designed to welcome a precious little baby deserves a precious little cake.  That’s where today’s featured design comes in.  Created for a baby shower and inspired by the event decor, this cake is a tiny piece of party heaven.  Playful pom poms are translated into hundreds of sugar petals nestled tightly together.  Giving this cake a very fabulous, very frilly, pom-like bottom tier.  And if you’re a fan of fun party straws… check out that top tier!  Grey and white spirals resembling the trendy striped straws we see in so many of today’s parties.  It’s a special delivery you don’t want to miss.  Something sweet is on the way…. and it’s this Spirals & Poms Baby Shower Cake!  Created by Rachael Teufel, of Intricate Icings Cake Design in Erie, Colorado.

Rachael of Intricate Icings gives us the scoop on this event:

“We have the pleasure of working with some really amazing vendors in the wedding industry, especially our planner friends.  Boy do they make our lives so much easier when delivering cakes!   So needless to say we were thrilled when Amber of Save the Date Events , contacted us with the exciting news that a fellow planner, Gabby, was expecting.  Amber did an amazing job pulling together some of the cutest baby shower details I have ever seen and what better way to welcome a new baby than to enjoy a tea party with your closest friends.”

Rachael of Intricate Icings tells us more about this cake:

“We adorned this vintage cake with a few hundred petals to create the look of a paper pom on the bottom tier and then spiraled a few stripes to mimic the straws.  I’m in love with the sugar banner honoring baby Hudson.”

Mottled Ombré Frills
January 23rd, 2013 by Carrie Sellman | 9 Comments

Ruffle Cakes.  Frill Cakes.  Whatever you call them, I think we can all agree.  They’re fabulous cakes!  It’s hard to believe it, but we’ve been gushing over this incredible style of cake for several years now.  Wisps of fondant so delicate and thin, they’re almost translucent.  Gracefully encircling the cake in rows upon rows of beauty.  Many, many gorgeous ruffle cakes have graced the pages of this blog.  And today we have a spectacular new design from the lady who put fondant frills on the map.  And inspired one of the most popular cake trends going.  Yes, Maggie Austin is back today!  Sharing a deeper, darker, richer spin on her signature frills.  Shades of purple, red and blue are on display in this stunning Mottled Ombré Frills cake.

Maggie tells us more about her cake:

“This cake is inspired by Mark Rothko’s bold, graphic oil paintings.  I wanted to find a way to bring together unusual colors in an unconventional way while still working with the fondant frills technique.  Because the frills are paper-thin and fade from saturate to tint, they have an ethereal quality.  But there’s also a bit of an edge, which appeals to me.”

Oh for the love of beautiful, fabulous frills.  This cake is simply breathtaking!

If you’ve ever wondered how Maggie creates her exquisite frill cakes, now you can find out first hand.  She’s teaching a class online at Craftsy and sharing all of her insider tips, tricks and techniques!  I just watched Maggie’s class from beginning to end.  And I must say that I’m inspired to make a cake covered in frills.  I spend so much time blogging now, and not as much time baking and designing.  But Maggie’s techniques are straightforward and definitely achievable.  Plus her calm and encouraging demeanor is just what you want out of an instructor.  If you haven’t already checked out, you can find her Fondant Frills class on Craftsy HERE.

A special thank you to Maggie Austin for sharing such a remarkable design with us!  We’re always thrilled to have the Queen of Frills stop by!

Dina of  Deliciously Darling tells us more about this dessert table:

All you need is Love – Famous words, a beautiful song, and cherished motto. I wanted to put together a romantic dessert table that would capture love. With shades of pink, gold and silver with vintage & glam touches that came together so beautifully.

Desserts in pinks, creams and chocolates came together in a delicious way. This stunning dessert table included three perfectly pipped cakes (each with their own icing technique), Pink cake pops with gold and silver details, mini sugar donuts, cupcakes with custom edible fondant toppers, whoopie pies and individual napa valley chocolate cheesecakes, chocolate covered oreos with lace detail, custom heart sugar cookies and of course perfect pink french macarons.

These desserts are stunningly displayed on JCT Kitchen’s rustic table accented with a pink runner from I Do Linens and a fun and beautiful tassel garland from The Flair Exchange.”
