Lesley of Royal Bakery shares the story behind her design:

“This shower cake was created for a vintage toy-themed ‘Baby-Q.’  The dad-to-be’s mother had saved all his childhood tin trucks and used these to decorate tables laid with white butcher’s paper and burlap runners.  Metal sand pails full of crayons, pinwheels, spinning tops and yo-yos encouraged children to draw on the tablecloths and have fun the old-fashioned way. Taking pride of place was the dad-to-be’s old red and white tricycle, fully restored by his mom and ready for the new addition to the family.  She asked that the cake feature a much-loved Tonka truck complete with dents and scratches, along with other vintage toys in a color scheme of red, dark teal, linen and burlap.”

Angel Wings Dessert Table
September 13th, 2012 by Carrie Sellman | 6 Comments

Today’s feature is a delightful dessert table full of delicate handmade treasures.  Armed with a stack of doilies and a whole lot of love, Shevi of Little Wish Cakes created this dessert display for her daughter’s First Communion celebration.  Inspired by the wings of an angel, the table is soft, feminine and oh-so-pretty.  Doilies make an appearance everywhere from the statement-making backdrop to the cupcake toppers, name tags and juice bottles.  A lace doily pattern also appears on the gorgeous cake, cookies and cupcakes!  Did I mention there were some doilies involved?!    It all adds up to one beautiful display!  Prepare to be smitten with this Angel Wings Dessert Table

Shevi from Little Wish Cakes shares the story behind this dessert table:

“I always like my tables to have details that are handmade – at least I try and also like to challenge and prove to myself that with a little effort one can make the most simplest of things look grand. These tables can be created by anyone as most of the goodies are baked at home and most of the craft items are handmade. You can do the easy thing and buy the printables. But I don’t think it will have the special touch and then there is also the factor of going over budget.

Being a 10 year my daughter Tiyana does not want to be considered a little girl anymore and often thinks herself to be more funky than cute.  So I organized this table secretly, as She is still MY little Girl no matter what. I did not want to create the more traditional Communion Cake and Table. As much as it is a religious event, it is also a celebration.”

Shevi from Little Wish Cakes shares her inspiration:

“So keeping in mind that ‘Daughters are Little Angels sent from above’, I thought of Delicate Angel Wings as a theme or the main element around which I would base the whole table.  But then I was stumped, how am I going to use wings?  So I was wracking my brains trying to come up with a substitute or something similar to wings.  This is when I thought of Doilies, which are very feminine and delicate in nature and very pretty.  This set the theme for the table – Doilies and Pastel shades.  (Wonder if I went a bit overboard with the delicateness.)

Keeping the Doily theme in mind I created the cake.  The bottom tier had scalloped edged circles cut and on each circle the details were individually cut using piping tips, to make them look like Doilies. I did the same for the cookies as well.  Each cookie had its very own design on it.  No two cookies were alike!

My daughter loved her little surprise and hope everyone else enjoys looking at it as much as I did creating it.”

Thing One & Thing Two Cake
September 12th, 2012 by Carrie Sellman | 8 Comments

Dr. Seuss himself would be excited about today’s cake.  It’s playful.  It’s charming.  It’s just down right seussical!  Created for a twin’s first birthday celebration, this design brings Seuss’s classic book,  The Cat in the Hat, to life.  From the Cat’s iconic striped hat to his umbrella and ball, no detail is too small.  But the real stars of this cake are Thing One and Thing Two, perfectly adapted in honor of the birthday boy and girl.  Their kites are flying and the sky is the limit!  Join me in this fanciful cake world, created by Yeni Monroy and her team at Dream Day Cakes®.  It’s an incredibly whimsical Thing One & Thing Two Cake!

Fred from Dream Day Cakes shares the story behind this design:

“Initially, the grandmother contacted us.  Celebrating her grandchildren’s first birthday was going to be a fun event and she wanted to know if we could do Thing 1 & 2 cake pops (oldest twin is thing 1, younger is thing 2).  We thought the idea was awesome and got her in the book.

About a week later, the children’s mother came into the bakery and thought it would be awesome to add a small cake, 2 smash cakes, and some cupcakes — all thing 1&2 themed.  We loved the idea and started to get pretty excited about the event.”

More from Fred from Dream Day Cakes :

“Yeni loves Dr. Seuss’ style and I think it really brings her A-game. For the cake, Thing 1 (Thomas) and Thing 2 (Katherine) fly their kites in the middle of a story. Reds, Blues, and Whites galore. Flat, edible cut-outs were hand drawn/painted and then added to the cake to make a really fun 3D effect (with the layers of cutouts).

Yeni still won’t tell me how she did the kite strings. That blew me away.”

Fred is right…. those kite strings are crazy good.  They’re suspended in thin air!  But then again, everything about this cake is crazy good!  And I love how the design completely encircles the cake.  The back side of the cake is just as fabulous as the front!  If you look closely below, you’ll see that the Fish is actually jumping out of a 3D fish bowl attached to the back of the cake.  Genius!

Let’s take a peek at all of the additional Thing 1 and Thing 2 sweets.  The blue hair is flying high on these matching cupcakes and cake pops!  Not to mention the adorable coordinating mini cakes, iced in buttercream and ready to be smashed!

If you’ve been reading, you’ll know that I’ve said this before.  But it’s worth saying again.  Yeni’s cakes are so meticulous and her attention to detail is amazing!  This design captures the cheerful chaos of the original book with such creativity and charm.  It’s fun to have fun… and this cake knows how!

A huge thanks to Yeni and Fred at Dream Day Cakes® for sharing this whimsical Thing One & Thing Two Cake with us today!  Just look at Thing Two…. he’s sending us off with a big wave and a cheerful smile!  Saying, until next time Dream Day Cakes….
