Erin shared a few thoughts about her inspiration for this design:

“The idea for this cake started with the pattern.  New England is home to the rustic preppy chic wedding, and I wanted to come up with something that was both simple and fancy at the same time.  Thinking about the elements of an elegant barn wedding, I initially thought of chicken wire.  Once I started playing with the repeating hexagon shape, I realized a honeycomb effect might be a bit more sophisticated.  It also lead me to include the gilded napoleonic bee element.  Honey, bees – needed flowers!  So I created very natural looking gum paste magnolias to finish the design.  I wanted to add a floral element that looked more like how the flower would appear in nature, as opposed to more of an arranged look.”

Seriously.  I can’t decide what I like most about this cake!  The incredible bee with its intricate gold detailing or the delightful flowers?  Or possibly the honeycomb pattern?

Renata kindly shared with us a few thoughts about her fabric flower technique:

“The idea was to create a French inspired cake, with a romantic, retro-chic feel. The larger flowers were inspired by fabric flowers and I constructed them in a similar way you made a fabric one. Each petal was a circle scored with lines and then pleated in the middle to make it concave. The petals were them arranged to dry on a flower forming mold. Lastly I piped some “stitching” on the edge on each petal.”

The detail work on this cake is just breathtaking!  From the stitching work at the top of each tier to the piping on the fabric flowers, it is just gorgeous!

Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch… a piece of cake!  Today’s cake is so ridiculously cute and clever, it will have you sing-songing back into childhood!  From Humpty Dumpty to Mary and her little lamb, all of your favorite nursery rhyme stars are making an appearance!  Created by the talented Rebecca Sutterby of Sugar Creations, this cake will have you jumping over the moon!  Join me for some fun as we enjoy this playful Nursery Rhymes 1st Birthday Cake!

Nursery Rhyme 1st Birthday Cake

Rebecca Sutterby from Sugar Creations, shared a few thoughts with us about her creation…

“The customer asked for a Nursery Rhyme theme and let me run wild with it.  I LOVE it when they give me creative freedom!  For the Humpty Dumpty figure and the cow, I covered Rice Krispie treats with modeling chocolate and then added gumpaste details.  In the other figures, I used large gumballs inside the heads and bodies.  They take up space so that you use less gumpaste or fondant and they also make the figure lighter.  I also did a color wash over the brick to give it some depth.  I mixed ivory airbrush color with vodka & painted it on.  Then I went back with vodka on a paper towel and “erased” the paint from the high points of the brick.”

Incredible, isn’t it?  I just had to highlight all of the different elements to this design… I didn’t want you to miss any of it!  This cake is so impressive at first glance and then when you really start looking…. it’s even more amazing!  I absolutely love how Rebecca seamlessly worked all of these nursery rhymes into one design.  Not to mention that the base of the cake is a 3D book.  Can it get much cuter?
