Bakery Review: Caramel Swirls

April 18, 2011 by Carrie Sellman

When I say caramel, you probably think of the ooey, gooey, super sweet caramel that is found in commercial candy.  Now imagine something much better.  A rich, dark caramel that is silky smooth and melts in your mouth.  A caramel that is made from scratch using all natural ingredients, just the way you would make it (if you knew how and had the time!).  This is the signature milk caramel of Caramel Swirls, a gourmet cake and pastry shop located in Daytona Beach, FL.

Caramel Swirls is an all natural bakery that whips up irresistible desserts from scratch each day.  I recently had the pleasure of working with Caramel Swirls for a baby shower I hosted.  They provided some of their decadent goodies for the dessert table along with extra samples for us to try.  Let me tell you, everyone was raving!  I wish you could lick your screen to get a taste, but you’ll have to rely on my descriptive vocabulary for now.  So grab your coffee and prepare to drool as we take a look at the sweet treats of Caramel Swirls.

These Cafe Caramel Cookies are the perfect combination of chocolate, coffee and caramel. Two thin espresso infused chocolate shortbread cookies filled with milk caramel filling then dipped in chocolate.  Both beautiful and delicious!

My personal favorite had to be the caramel Little Treasures.  Is it candy?  Is it a cookie?  Is it a petit four?  These little treats are hard to label and even harder to resist.  Once you’re past the smooth chocolate exterior you’ll find a dollop of rich milk caramel on top of a vanilla shortbread cookie.  This little gem is so unique and quite honestly one of the best treats I’ve tasted.  Period.

Also noteworthy were the Espresso Brownies and Mudslide Orange Walnut Cookies.  The brownies were crisp and flaky on the outside but dense, rich and moist on the inside.  Just as a brownie should be!  I personally did not try any of the Mudslide Cookies (only because I ate too many Little Treasures!) but everyone else loved them.  How could a cookie that combines chocolate chips, orange zest, espresso and toasted walnuts be anything less than amazing?

Last but certainly not least are the Winter White Caramel Cookies.  This was another favorite!  A light and crisp meringue coating surrounds two honey cookies filled with milk caramel.  It’s a cookie… but it’s also like a little miniature cake.  It’s moist, filled with caramel and just plain good.

If you haven’t figured it out by now, I’ve become a huge fan of Caramel Swirls.  Everything arrived on time, beautifully packaged and tasting scrumptious.  These treats would be a perfect gift for Mother’s Day, birthdays or any day.  And you can feel good about your order knowing that these sweet creations are not only delicious but have a mission: to help fight childhood hunger. For every cake you purchase Caramel Swirls will donate 10% of the sales price to help feed a child in need.   Now that is a double treat!

A very special thank you to Caramel Swirls for sharing some of their delectable treats with us.   You can check out these goodies along with many other cakes, cheesecakes, cookies and brownies on the Caramel Swirl’s website.  Enjoy!

{If your bakery is proud of your treats and think they will stand up to our taste test… send me a note!}

    These are inspired by classic Argentinean treats! The caramel cookies are just alfajores and the little treasures are called “conitos” or “havannetts”, they’re both extremely popular in the Southern Cone. I’m pretty sure you can order them from Havanna (just google Havanna- yes, two n’s) and their delicious looking website should pop right up! Yum!! Made me hungry.
