Vintage Toys & Burlap

September 14, 2012 by Carrie Sellman

Today’s featured cake is so ridiculously adorable, you’re going to flip when you see it.  Flip… like a spinning top flips!  Created for a Vintage Toy Baby Shower, this design is full of old-fashioned fun!  Charming details like a spinning top, yo-yo and pinwheels set the stage for childhood nostalgia.  While a toy truck topper drives us back to the good-old-days with its incredible details and teddy bear passenger.  Rich red and teal are paired with a light linen and burlap accents (love) to create an eye-catching color combo.  Throw in some fabulous retro style and a meticulous attention to detail and you have one amazing cake!  Get ready to squeal like a little kid over this Vintage Toys & Burlap cake by Lesley Wright of Royal Bakery.

Lesley of Royal Bakery shares the story behind her design:

“This shower cake was created for a vintage toy-themed ‘Baby-Q.’  The dad-to-be’s mother had saved all his childhood tin trucks and used these to decorate tables laid with white butcher’s paper and burlap runners.  Metal sand pails full of crayons, pinwheels, spinning tops and yo-yos encouraged children to draw on the tablecloths and have fun the old-fashioned way. Taking pride of place was the dad-to-be’s old red and white tricycle, fully restored by his mom and ready for the new addition to the family.  She asked that the cake feature a much-loved Tonka truck complete with dents and scratches, along with other vintage toys in a color scheme of red, dark teal, linen and burlap.”

Oh my goodness, we have to take a better look at the toy truck.  The details are just amazing!  From bumper to bumper – dents, scratches and all!  And guess who’s riding in the truck bed… a sweet little teddy bear!  Is your heart melting yet?

There is just something about the “Vintage Style” be it toys or cakes or cloths whatever it is, the style from the past will always live on. Love the cake…
