Succulent Wedding Cake

August 26, 2013 by Carrie Sellman

There is something so fresh and summery about succulents.  They instantly take my mind to a warm, arid day somewhere in California, bright rays of sunshine streaming down.  And well… what’s not to love about that?  So when you pair the natural beauty of succulent plants with delicate white roses and a gorgeous cake, the end result is nothing short of spectacular.  Fondant succulents in hues ranging from pale grey and green to deep reds and rust are artfully arranged on a pristine white cake.  It’s not every day when you see a cake so crisp, clean and perfectly textured.  It’s a rustic design full of wild beauty and it comes to us from Lesley Wright, owner of Royal Bakery located in Campbell, California.  Let’s take a look at this charming Succulent Wedding Cake.

Lesley of Royal Bakery gives us the scoop on her design:

“This cake was created for the wedding of Megan and Matt. Sweethearts since high school, they tied the knot at the beautiful Wente Vineyards in Livermore, California. The whole wedding had a very rustic feel with flowers arranged in Mason jars and tin cans, guests signing an old wooden bench and photographs of the couple pegged to raffia tied around tree trunks.”

Lesley of Royal Bakery shares her techniques:

“The cake featured a rustic texture on the bottom 9″ and top 5″ tiers. This was applied with a very thin layer of royal icing, which was deemed preferable to buttercream for an outdoor August reception! The one-and-a-half height middle tier required a perfectly smooth white fondant finish, with gently rounded edges. White gum paste roses and fondant succulents in shades of pale green and grey were arranged between the top two tiers. The wedding cake and groom’s cake were arranged on piles of antique packing crates, continuing the rustic theme.”

This is so lovely – light and fresh looking. Just wondering how the flowers and succulents are attached ? Without tearing fondant? Thanks
