Rustic Buttercream & Sugar Flowers

October 2, 2013 by Carrie Sellman

Grab your cup of coffee and settle in for a few as we pour over the incredible images of today’s featured cake.  Because well, it’s one of those cakes that will have you feeling warm and fuzzy inside.  Appreciating that less if often more and that perfect doesn’t always mean sleek and polished.  This natural beauty is what happens when rustic meets romance and love ensues.  Charming ridges of buttercream skip around the cake as if they’re leading us to patches of beautiful blooms.  Blossoming sugar flowers delicately crafted and artfully arranged to create a look that is pretty as can be.  It’s just downright gorgeous and it comes to us from Erica O’Brien, owner of Erica O’Brien Cake Design located in Hamden, CT.  We’ve been gushing over Erica’s cakes for several years now (like this ruffles & lace design and this winter white design) and we just can’t get enough!  Let’s take in every last morsel of today’s little lovely.

Erica O’Brien gives us the scoop on her design:

“This cake was designed for a bride that had only two requests: rustic buttercream and pastel sugar flowers.  Having the freedom to create and arrange the flowers as we saw fit really gave us an artistic advantage.  Rather than being confined by the specifications of a sketch, we could improvise–adding here, taking away there–all with stunning results.  The soft, homespun look of the buttercream really worked with the organic, earthy feel of the flowers.  It was one of my favorite cakes of the year.”

Seriously, could the sugar flowers be any more gorgeous?  The soft mix of colors and textures creates an arrangement that is simply amazing.  Just look at these pretty petals!

Ahhh, now that is one spectacular cake!  I just keep scrolling through the images, loving it more with each and every pass.  As always, it’s a pleasure to have Erica O’Brien stop by and share one of her new designs with us.

Gorgeous cake. I thought the gumpaste flowers were real. I love the rough buttercream look as well.

Hi, I was wondering how did she do it so the flowers didn’t soak up the moisture of the buttercream and “flopped”. The cake looks stunning!! Great inspiration.
