Gold Sequins Cake

May 13, 2014 by Carrie Sellman

Why hello gorgeous!  We’re always excited to showcase a beautiful new design, especially when it’s as spectacular as today’s cake.  How can anyone resist five tiers of fabulous, girly-girl fun like this?  Glittering gold tiers covered in an abundance of shimmering sequins, alternating with tiers of soft, romantic color.  But it’s not just any old color.  It’s a dreamy, watercolor-inspired, chevron pattern in a mix of subtle pastels with hints of gold.  Throw in a scalloped border accented by delicate gold rope edging, two big, lush peonies — and you have one incredible cake!

It all comes to us from Rachel Skvaril, owner of Fondant Flinger in New Orleans.  Rachel created this beauty to celebrate the launch of a new line of cake stands by Sarah’s Stands.  This new Picture Perfect cake stand collection includes new color choices, new sizes plus an upgraded finish that is both dent and scratch resistant.  It sounds good to us, and it looks even better!  Let’s take a look at Rachel’s beautiful cake, displayed on the new At First Blush cake stand.

Rachel of Fondant Flinger shares the inspiration behind her design:

“Metallic gold and sequins are pretty much everywhere you look these days and I immediately knew that I wanted to include them in my cake design.  When I saw the amazing color of the Sarah’s Stand, I knew that I wanted to incorporate a bit of mint, some gold sequins and bring out the pink color of the stand in the design.”

Rachel of Fondant Flinger tells us about her technique:

“Using wafer paper and a faux gold leaf technique, I created the patterned tiers of the cake.  I loved the water color look of the pattern and added additional depth and shading to the pattern with various petal dusts.  Because peonies are one of my favorite flowers, I decided to use these as my focal points of the cake.  I love the different textures of this cake; the softness of the flower petals, the dimension added with the gold confetti sequin tiers and the sheen of the wafer paper.  Sarah’s Stand is the perfect finishing touch on this cake design with its sleek design, pop of color and shine.”

Absolutely, positively stunning!  But then, we’ve come to expect nothing less from Rachel.  She continually wows us with each and every cake.  You can see what I mean here — a look back at all of Rachel’s features here on the blog.  You will absolutely love these cakes, especially her Blue Poppy Flowers Cake.  Oh, and definitely her Patriotic Flag Cake, created for our 4th of July series back in 2012.

A big thank you to  Rachel Skvaril of Fondant Flinger and Sarah’s Stands for sharing this amazing cake inspiration with us today.  You can check all of the lovely new cake stands in the Picture Perfect Collection HERE.

    Hello,
    I really love your work
I would like to ask about the gold you used. Could it be used with oil instead of alcohol?
If yes, could you please give me the name?
    Thank you
    Widad
