Dancing Violets Cake

June 11, 2014 by Carrie Sellman

Today’s feature is a wow-worthy design all about color.  Rich, statement-making hues perfectly complement three extra-tall, slender tiers — creating a sleek profile that is both beautiful and bold.  Gently flowing ruffles add a soft layer of detail and set the stage for a handful of African Violets, with delicate blooms and charming yellow centers.  It all comes together in an unexpectedly stunning way that is sure to turn some heads.

This gorgeous cake comes to us from Rachael Teufel, owner of Intricate Icings Cake Design in Erie, Colorado.   Rachael created this design to celebrate the launch of a new Picture Perfect cake stand collection by Sarah’s Stands.  And well, we think this little red knockout looks absolutely fabulous paired up with a pop of purple.  Let’s take a look at Rachael’s beautiful cake, displayed on the new Dancing Violets cake stand.

Rachael of Intricate Icings Cake Design shares the inspiration behind her design:

“I love combining elements of different inspiration pieces into one cohesive design.  My dancing violets cake was inspired by two gowns and the south African Violet.  The first is a wavy gown by Krikor Jabotian and the second is a red and purple floral dress by Giambattista Valli.  I was drawn to the flowing fabric of one gown and the bold color combination of the other.  I wanted to also draw attention to the violets by making them several times larger than they are typically found in nature.  I felt the color combination of this cake worked wonderfully with the bright color of Sarah’s stand.”

Rachael of Intricate Icings Cake Design  tells us about her technique:

“For a more dramatic effect this cake was created with three double barrel cakes, each 8 inches tall (6-8-10R).  I used a modeling chocolate wrap to cover the cakes and seamed the top edge.  The flowing ruffle was created with a two tone modeling chocolate piece that seams to hover over the top tier.  I created sugar violets from gumpaste to accent the bold color choice.

I am always a little fearful of placing an extra tall cake on a tall narrow pedestal, but let me say that I had no fears with this one.  This stand is quite stable and very supportive.  It also has a beautiful, yet durable finish!”
