August 28, 2014 by Erica OBrien

Our contributor, Erica OBrien, owner of Erica OBrien Cake Design, is back for her next post in our new series called Trending.  Erica is helping us translate today’s top trends in fashion, design, art and everyday life into fabulous cake designs.  Watch each month as she goes from inspiration on pinterest to cake concept and then the final cake design.  With this insider look into her creative process, we hope you’ll start to see inspiration everywhere in world around you.  Today we’re talking boho chic!

As the daughter of a former hippie, there’s always been a place in my heart for the boho look, and a recent shopping trip confirmed that the trend is hotter than ever.  I wanted this cake to be an eclectic mix of colors, patterns, and techniques, inspired by an array of cultures and colors.

I used a die cut on colored gumpaste for the lace shapes (which is just one of many techniques I teach in my new online class at Craftsy!) and all of the dots and bead borders were hand piped.

For the turquoise and silver jewels, sculpted out of fondant, we mixed narrow strips of charcoal gray fondant into turquoise fondant to achieve the fractures and painted gray fondant with silver luster.  The elephants, diamond border on the top tier, and blue and yellow Indian-inspired shapes were done with a stencil.

For the silver tier, we liquified silver luster dust with grain alcohol and painted and then dry brushed it onto gray colored fondant. It’s a cake that would make any bohemian (including my mom) quite proud!
