Welcoming Spring Flowers

April 2, 2013 by Carrie Sellman

April is upon us and we’re really starting to see the first signs of Spring.  To include those pesky spring showers.  But have no fear… April showers bring May flowers, right?  So to help us tolerate the all the rain to come, we’re going to focus on the pretty side of that old saying with a cake that is all about the flowers.  Gorgeous.  Bright.  Flowers!

Today’s design comes to us from Rachel Skvaril, owner of Fondant Flinger in New Orleans.  Rachel has a flair for creating incredible spring cakes that seem to capture the warmth of the sun.  We featured her Blue Poppy Flowers Cake last spring and we’ve been smitten ever since.  {If you missed it last year, it’s definitely worth a second click HERE}.  And today’s cake is yet another spring stunner!  With ruffled grass and cascading blossoms, this cake is blooming with beauty.  Let’s enjoy this vibrant cake and its Welcoming Spring Flowers!

Rachel of Fondant Flinger gives us the scoop on her design:

“Our church recently underwent months of searching for a new Pastor.  Finally this past week, the congregation was blessed with a new Pastor.  I was asked to create a cake for a welcoming ladies luncheon in honor of the new pastor’s wife, Kristy.    I knew I wanted it to be bold, springlike and incredibly happy looking since this was a huge celebration.  The ladies gave me a luncheon napkin to work from so I could match the flower style and the colors.”

Rachel of Fondant Flinger shares her techniques:

“The bottom tier needed a fantastic texture so I piped rows of grassy “ruffles” with a leaf tip with each row slightly overlapping the one above.  I finished the tier off with a name plaque for Kristy and a few flowers for finishing touches.  I did my best to replicate the style of flowers on the napkins and highlighted the tips of the flowers with white food coloring.  Using an extruder, I created the stems and positioned them on the cake and finished it off with the bright spring flowers.  The colors on this cake just made me smile: bright, bold and a wonderful way to kick off springtime.”

Oh for the love of ruffles!  That ruffled grass is incredible!  I’m loving the soft texture that it adds to this design.  Not to mention the vibrant color scheme with its crisp sky blue and nice pop of pink.  This cake just shines with the beauty of spring.  It would be the perfect centerpiece for any spring shower or birthday celebration.

A very special thank you to Rachel of Fondant Flinger for sharing her Welcoming Spring Flowers Cake with us today.  It is simply spectacular!

Fantastic! How do you get the flowers to stick to the side of the buttercream frosting? Do you create them on a skewer? Mine are always falling off. Thanks!

Azure, I did create them on wires and did some support with skewers the reached about 2/3 of the way into the cake. The flowers were also gumpaste so they were a bit lighter than the fondant ones.
