We’re kicking off 2015 with a brand new cake series – and it’s all about trends for the upcoming year! What better way to spend our January than oohing and aahing over marvelous cake designs while we get the scoop on trends from the ladies who know. Here’s how it all came together:
Top cake designers were asked to predict what cake trends will be hot in 2015. Based on their insights, this talented group got busy creating innovative new cakes, exclusively for this cake series and especially for you! For our newly-engaged friends who are dreaming of a cake worthy of their big day. For our cake-making friends who are hungry for new ideas and seeking inspiration for 2015 display cakes. And lastly for our cake-loving friends who simply find joy in the beauty of an original cake design. These cakes are for you!
I hope you’ll join us over the next two weeks as we debut a new trend-inspired design each day! Let’s get started, shall we? Our first design includes gold, fringe, feathers and blue…
The first cake in our 2015 Wedding Cake Preview comes to us from Rachael Teufel, owner of Intricate Icings Cake Design in Erie, Colorado. We’ve been loving on Rachael’s cakes for years and we’re thrilled that she’s joining us with her trend prediction. Rachael has such an elegant style and a unique flair when it comes to trends. She can take a trend and translate it into a fabulous cake design that’s exquisite and not at all “trendy”. She’s been on the front end of fabulous things like glitter, mercury glass, mini cakes and feathers – creative cuts, pom poms and dress cakes. I can’t even begin to recap them all, so I’ll just hit you with a link and let you browse through all of her features here on the blog. So it comes as no surprise that Rachael would dream up something fabulous!
Inspired by Marchesa fashion hot off the runway, let’s take a look at Rachael’s creation…
Rachael Teufel of Intricate Icings Cake Design shares the inspiration behind her design:
“I chose a beautiful spring outfit by Marchesa as my inspiration for this cake. This outfit incorporates several elements that are quite popular in the fashion world: gold, fringe, and feathers. Color, especially blue, is hot on the runway this year. Throw that together with the ever popular gold and blush combo and you have one stunning outfit.”
Rachael Teufel of Intricate Icings Cake Design tells us about her technique:
“At first glance the pattern looks more like painted brush strokes, but a closer look reveals a beautiful floral pattern in shades of blush. I hand cut and painted modeling chocolate appliques to mimic this floral design. I knew I wanted some of these flowers to carry over the edges of a few tiers to create more depth, which is why I chose to cut them out first. I also added hand-painted blossoms directly onto the fondant to create one more level of depth.”
More from Rachael Teufel :
“It’s hard to miss the beautiful fringe detail on the top of the blouse, so I made this the focal point in the center of the cake. The fringe was created using textured modeling chocolate and applied over a clear separator to allow some light through the fringe (see the step-by-step here). I also added a thin wrap of wafer paper to represent the sheer band along the neckline.
The last detail on my cake comes from a not so obvious element on the outfit. I love the the subtle detail of the gold buttons and a dangling feather tassel around her ankle. The feathers were cut from wafer paper, textured, and shaped for a very light and airy effect.”

The flowers are amazing! Its so pretty. I love the color Pink.
I think, I won’t be able to eat that cake if I that would be my wedding cake. That is too precious and too beautiful to eat. Hahaha. I can’t remember whose celebrity wedding had that kind of cake design before.
It doesn’t look like a cake–it’s so flawless. I love how the elements of the dress were incorporated into the cake’s decorations. So delicate it seems unreal. Wow!
