Today’s feature is one of those cakes that just makes you feel happy! And it’s easy to see why. Who can resist a charming horse wearing an adorable bandana? With a tousled mane and infectious smile, this little guy will steal your heart. He’s the star of this playful 1st birthday cake, created by Peggy Lee of Peggy Does Cake. Wooden fences encircle a field of sunflowers while ladybugs flutter about. Silver horseshoes, rope borders and a few red apples complete the delightful country scene. Oh and let’s not forget the contrasting cow print! Get ready to oohh and aahh over this Happy Horse Cake!
Peggy of Peggy Does Cake gives us the scoop on her design:
“Designing this simple little cake was actually quite tricky for me! I was given a list of ‘must haves’ and then granted the freedom to turn that list into any kind of cake I wanted for Riely’s first birthday party. I really had no clue what to do at first and considered just doing a single tiered cake at one point. I was just originally asked to create a cake with a western feel and to include a horse, a rope, a fence, a couple horseshoes, etc.  I’ve done the cowboy thing for plenty of adults, but I’d never really thought about this theme specifically for a baby – and to make it more difficult, the cake was to be done in browns, but needed to be ‘bright and cheerful.’  That was the hardest part, for sure.”

Peggy of Peggy Does Cake talks about her technique:
“I think the most fun part of designing a cake is also the most delicate: customizing it just perfectly. I really wanted to add a splash of color to the brown color palette, so I ran with the ‘horse eating an apple’ idea, and incorporated a few other bits of red with the ladybugs, the number one, and the horse’s bandanna. It turned out to be just enough to make it a happy cake.  Beneath the fondant finish was a bottom tier of chocolate fudge cake with chocolate butter cream filling and an outside of dark chocolate ganache, and a top tier of white almond sour cream cake with vanilla bean butter cream filling and an outside layer of white chocolate ganache.”

Oh my goodness! The more you look at this cake, the more you see. It’s seriously adorable and chalk full of precious details. From the silver horseshoes to the red apples, and everything in between! Not to mention the loveable horse topper. It’s a perfect design for spring and summer birthdays for the little ones.

April is upon us and we’re really starting to see the first signs of Spring. To include those pesky spring showers. But have no fear… April showers bring May flowers, right? So to help us tolerate the all the rain to come, we’re going to focus on the pretty side of that old saying with a cake that is all about the flowers. Gorgeous. Bright. Flowers!
Today’s design comes to us from Rachel Skvaril, owner of Fondant Flinger in New Orleans. Rachel has a flair for creating incredible spring cakes that seem to capture the warmth of the sun. We featured her Blue Poppy Flowers Cake last spring and we’ve been smitten ever since. {If you missed it last year, it’s definitely worth a second click HERE}. And today’s cake is yet another spring stunner! With ruffled grass and cascading blossoms, this cake is blooming with beauty. Let’s enjoy this vibrant cake and its Welcoming Spring Flowers!

Rachel of Fondant Flinger gives us the scoop on her design:
“Our church recently underwent months of searching for a new Pastor. Finally this past week, the congregation was blessed with a new Pastor.  I was asked to create a cake for a welcoming ladies luncheon in honor of the new pastor’s wife, Kristy.   I knew I wanted it to be bold, springlike and incredibly happy looking since this was a huge celebration.  The ladies gave me a luncheon napkin to work from so I could match the flower style and the colors.”

Rachel of Fondant Flinger shares her techniques:
“The bottom tier needed a fantastic texture so I piped rows of grassy “ruffles” with a leaf tip with each row slightly overlapping the one above. Â I finished the tier off with a name plaque for Kristy and a few flowers for finishing touches. Â I did my best to replicate the style of flowers on the napkins and highlighted the tips of the flowers with white food coloring. Â Using an extruder, I created the stems and positioned them on the cake and finished it off with the bright spring flowers. Â The colors on this cake just made me smile: bright, bold and a wonderful way to kick off springtime.”

Oh for the love of ruffles! That ruffled grass is incredible! I’m loving the soft texture that it adds to this design. Not to mention the vibrant color scheme with its crisp sky blue and nice pop of pink. This cake just shines with the beauty of spring. It would be the perfect centerpiece for any spring shower or birthday celebration.
A very special thank you to Rachel of Fondant Flinger for sharing her Welcoming Spring Flowers Cake with us today. It is simply spectacular!

Rebecca of Sugar Creations gives us the scoop on her design:
“The cake was for a first birthday, as you can see. The theme started with the Owl party ware that the client picked out. But they were having the party at a Bed & Breakfast, so they asked me to incorporate a damask print and pearls to make it a little more fancy. The ruffles around the base are fondant. The damask is stenciled royal. The pearls, bow, & owl are gumpaste.  And the smash cake was a little 6″ round. ”

Oh for the love of owls and all things cute! So many little details, meticulously brought together into one seriously fabulous design. A very special thank you to Rebecca Sutterby of Sugar Creations for sharing her incredible Frilly Pink Owl Cake with us today!
